Mount Pilatus

Beginning at Alpnachstad listening to these men play the alpine horns while we waited for the cogwheel railway ride up to Pilatus.

We started at Alpnachstad to get to Pilatus Kulm on the world's steepest cogwheel railway, which winds up the 48% gradient through lush meadows covered with alpine flowers, passing mountain streams and fascinating rock faces.the track is 4618m, the height difference is 1635m  and ascends in 30 min. carrying up to 340 persons at one time.

Note the snow...and yes it was quite cool up there.

Mount Pilatus is Lucerne's own mountain and is one of the most beautiful and legendary places in central Switzerland.  On a clear day the mountain offers a spectacular panoramic view of Lucerne Bay and the city of Lucerne. We were able to take in many breathtaking views before the clouds rolled in and the rain began to fall.

Picture time up top on Mount Pilatus.

The clouds beginning to roll in.

We returned to Lucerne via cable cars, again taking in the fantastic views of the beautiful countryside.

The question I have is how often do the people living up on the mountain go down to Lucerne?  The roads didn't look like winter roads to me...more like a trail.
